On The Road
With Music2Life

This year marks the 100th birthday of the late, great WOODY GUTHRIE, and Music2Life is kicking off a national tour to celebrate artists who keep his social-justice legacy alive. We'll join The GRAMMY Museum® and the Woody Guthrie Archives—along with musician-activists John Mellencamp, The Flaming Lips, Jackson Browne, Graham Nash, Rosanne Cash, David Amram and many more—to show how Guthrie's music and mission are still relevant today.

Our road trip begins March 9 in Guthrie's home state of Oklahoma, at the University of Tulsa, where we'll premiere our new music discovery tool. This one-of-a-kind song source lets viewers search music for social change by cause, artist or genre. (Check out the beta version.)

Then it's on to the University of Southern California (April 13 and 14), Penn State (September 7 and 8), Brooklyn College (September 21 and 22) and a gala celebration at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. (October 14). See the Woody 100 calendar of events for details, and join us on Facebook and Twitter where we'll post contests, tour news and updates on festivals and events as they're added to our line-up.

Putting Music to
Work for Change

Can music change lives? We know it can! The Music2Life Fellows program was created to support artists using music to create measurable social change in their communities. Our documentary, Songbird , follows one such artist, singer-songwriter Amy Carol Webb, who teamed up with ArtSpring in Miami, Florida, to create and produce a powerful program for women in prison. This guided songwriting workshop gives inmates an outlet for expression and a network of support, helping them heal emotional wounds and improve self esteem so they're better equipped to deal with life after they're released.

“The music becomes a vehicle to teach other ways of thinking and of living… taking what your life is and moving it [in] another direction,” says Webb. Developed with the assistance of Music2Life, the Songbird program has helped reduce the rate of return to prison among participants, and it's spreading public awareness about the value of correctional arts programming.

Throughout the year, we'll be sharing the stories of artists who make a difference with their music. Keep your eye on our Who's Bringing Music2Life? page!

Let's say you need a rock anthem for your human rights campaign … or a rap about the environment for your personal playlist ... or anti-bullying songs for your blog post. Where do you find them?

You can comb the Internet and scout the record stores, or you can use our new music discovery tool to search a rich database of songs that speak to hundreds of causes and concerns—from tolerance and equality to peace and freedom to economic and social justice. The Music2Life Song Source lets you sort by artist, genre or cause to learn more about today's music of meaning.

Don't see a song in our database? Add it. We need YOU to help us build our soundtrack for social change. In fact, we want you to give our shiny new program a new name! Contest details are coming soon. In the meantime, get to know the program: Explore songs, discover artists, add titles, share playlists, and suggest new features. Let's bring this music to life for people around the world—artists, activists, DJs, fans, journalists, nonprofits, music pros—who can put it to work for positive change.
